With new application of broadband and the development of media technology promoting the changes in users' needs, the demand of simple Internet access has growing to enjoy personalized entertainment and service via broadband, requiring bandwidth from the current less than 4Mbps to 20Mbps or more.The traditional access network technology , such as DSL, is unable to meet growing customer demand for high bandwidth.It is necessary to use the new technology to build the access to the network. With the advantages of low cost, high capacity, easiness to maintain, Passive Optical Network,using optical fiber as the transmission medium, is the best solution to solve the bottleneck of access network capacity.This paper firstly describes the current development status of PON technology, and analyses and compares the current mainstream technology, EPON, GPON, and then conduct a deep research and analysis on the application of PON technology. Combined with the author over the years' experience on planning and design of the PON network, the author describes the PON network construction mode, network capacity planning method, OLT planning methods, and ODN planning methods, and finally presents the PON network mode options and FTTH construction plans in different scenarios to provide the PON network operators with effective references of PON network construction, promoting the process of the deployment of PON networks in China, enhancing the network services capabilities and improving the national level of information.
