With the rapid development of information technology, people have increasing demands of network services. The access network has become a bottleneck of information highway and it restricts the development of the entire network. Based on the endless variety of access network technologies, the optical access network is considered as the most promising technologies. Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) has a network structure of point to multi-point, and it combines the technologies of integrated Ethernet and passive optical networking. Therefore, EPON has become the best choice for the next generation broadband access network with features of low cost, easy maintenance and high-bandwidth.This paper focuses on the architecture and key technologies of EPON. Because of its specificities, it can be seen as a combination of media and point to point network. In the downlink,it owns the connection of shared media. And in the uplink,it is link point-to-point network. The ONU commonly uses Time Division Multiple Access to send data. It is of great significance for bandwidth allocation technology to improve service quality of system and network performance. It is the one of core study for EPON.In this paper, EPON system model is constructed by Discrete Event Simulation Library which based on C++. The study proved that dynamic bandwidth assignment has a better network performance than static bandwidth assignment algorithm. Moreover, limited service is the best arithmetic of Interleaved Polling with Adaptive Cycle Time. This paper also put forward an improved utilization of idle time, which can effectively use the idle time when Optical Line Terminal is calculating. The simulation shows that the algorithm effectively improves the channel utilization throughput and network performance.
