ZigBee is designed for low-cost, low-power and short range wireless communication protocol,an emerging specifically for low-rate wireless personal area network, widely used in the fields of military, industrial, intelligent home, its wide range of applications is bound to bring great ease and convenience of people's daily lives. The main work of the paper include as follows:This paper first introduces the network topology, the ZigBee protocol architecture (including the physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer), the network address allocation mechanism, network formation technology, and other key technologies. And then the principle and working mechanism of the tree routing algorithm (Cluster-Tree) and ZigBee routing algorithm (ZBR) is researched in this paper, while using the NS Network Simulation Platform make performance simulation and analysis of the results with ZBR algorithm and Cluster-Tree algorithm for their packet delivery rate, average end to end delay, average hops and routing control overhead. Simulation results show that the ZBR algorithm has a higher packet delivery rate, low delay and hop count, but the ZBR algorithm compared to Cluster-Tree algorithm has more routing control overhead, too much control overhead will accelerate the energy consumption of nodes in the network and result in network partitioning premature. The last part of this article presents two strategies to improve the ZBR algorithm, which aim at reducing the routing control overhead in the network, the first one by restricting the maximum forwarding range of route request packet to reduce the part of the useless packet in order to reduce the routing control overhead; on the basis of this strategy, the other one by limiting the forwarding direction of route request packet to further reduce the control overhead. And make performance simulation comparison between improved ZBR algorithm and the original ZBR algorithm, simulation results show that improved ZBR algorithm effectively reduce the 25% of the network routing control overhead to achieve the desired design requirements. At last this paper makes a summary and outlooks for future research directions to the ZigBee routing algorithm.
