Nowadays, phased array radar has been used more and more widely, the research on which are unceasingly deep-going in the advanced technology fields of target identification, space detection, radar imaging and so on. The using of full digital control mode in each part of phased array radar leads higher technical requirements on beam controller including fast operating speed, few equipment, large dada handling capacity, multiple operation modes and high integrated level. For adapting to those requirements, this paper introduces the basic function and development trend of beam steering system of phased array radar, and elaborates the realization method of beam steering system. Then, the detailed design scheme and developing & debugging process of main control system of radar beam steering based on ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) are stated. The feasibility of realizing the functions of operation, control, communication of main control system of radar beam steering based on Advanced RISC Machines is also demonstrated. Finally, this paper lists several engineering realization methods and their schematic diagrams generally used by beam steering subsystem. The combination of software and hardware design satisfies the control function of radar beam steering system on module, so as to consummate the universalization and serialization design concept of beam steering system.
