Ever since the inception of radar and with the rapid developments of microelectronics technology, signal processing techniques and computer technology, the LSI chips are being widely used to the design of modern radar, which not only optimizes the system’s hardware developments and reduces the design costs, but also makes some aspects of radar been greatly improved in terms of miniaturization, integration and flexibility. In phased array radar, the beam steering system needs to quickly complete the calculation and control, condition monitoring and other functions for all antenna units, the traditional ways of hardware circuit design have already been difficult to meet the demands of the radar. The large scale integrated circuit design not only improves operation speed of beam steering system, but also has profounding significance in some fields including reducing the hardware space, declining the equipment cost, improving the system reliability and so forth.Based on the main working characteristics of phased array radar, this article describes the fundamental function and development trends as well as the composition of beam steering system, meanwhile, points out several common used design approaches including the subarray parallel operation method, host centralized computation way and multistage hybrid algorithm, finally puts an emphasis on the design concept of calculating and processing module on front. On the basis of above discussion and combining with the practical demands of modern project, the key technologies of beam steering system and the characteristics of FPGA(Field Program Gate Array) for LSI, this article puts forward the design idea which will use FPGA as the core device for calculation and control with the advantages of low cost, low power consumption, high security, high reliability and so on. The paper focus on the performance requirements and the functional requirements as well as the principles and plans of project implementation, at the same time, carries out the deep research into the key technology which consists of external interface protocol, serial bus, the code operation of beam control, online data loading, acquisition and BIT transmission on front, etc, ultimately, according to the hierarchical structure features of beam steering system for phrased array radar, the paper elaborates on functional components, system diagrams, hardware designs and software developments of main engine and subarray control module in detail.The design of beam control based on FPGA provides a new mode for beam steering system, at present it is being widely used to the design of phrased array radar and will have important promoting effects on the improvements of beam steering system.
