Beam steering system is unique to the phased array radar. It replaces the servo system of mechanical scanning radar. Its main function is to calculate.transfer and amplificate phase shifter code of each array element based on the beam pointing code with the control of computer. In the end it can control the transmitting and receiving phase of each array element. Therefore, its real time and high efficiency is important to phased array radar.With the increased array elements and the diversification of task of Ship-borne phased array radar, data transmission capacity and processing capacity of beam steering system has higher requirements. The traditional signal processing architecture based on CPCI and VME can not satisfy the higher requirements. VPX is used to solve the problem well.Firstly,this paper brings the discuss and simulation of principle phased array radar antenna. Secondly,it discusses the beam steering principle. It gives the research and analysis of electronic stability which is unique to the ship-borne phased array radar. Based on software algorithm it deduces the simplified formula to be convenient for the design of the program of the beam steering. Then it introduces the characteristics and basic functions of the beam steering system and some achieving problems, and points out that VPX system architecture is better to resolve these problems. So it Mainly introduced VPX architecture and serial RapidIO bus protocol in the application of the beam steering system. Finally, the focus of this paper is the design of beam steering system. This design is based on distributed beam steering system and software calculation method.According to the principle of beam steering design and requirements of the project, beam steering system was divided into two parts, namely main beam steering system and the subarray system. It describes the implementation of main beam steering system and the development and test of the underlying software in detail. At the same time, this paper expounds the tasks of subarray system, beam steering data operation,the fiber distribution and so on. The final testing of beam steering system proves that results meet the requirements.
