With the rapid development and extensive application of communication and network technology, networks have penetrated into all fields of human activity. More and more enterprises and organizations establish computer network systems related with their key business to enhance work efficiency and reduce costs. In the establishment of the network system, how to set up real-time monitoring of network equipment and links to detect a network failure, has benn an actual problems that the management and technical staff faced. Therefore, the network fault monitoring technology has great significance.SNMP is the factual standard in network management industry, and it is mainly applide to network fault management, fault management is the most important part of network management. Network fault monitoring is the effective premise of fault management. The design of high-quality network fault monitoring system and achieve efficient network fault monitoring have great practical meaning and value to improve the robustness and reliability of the network system and the availability of services.First of all, this paper outlines the network management, SNMP relevant content, discusses the technology of network fault management and network fault monitoring emphatically. Based on these technologies, an overall design of network fault monitoring system (NFMS) is made. In the framework, polling topology adaptive algorithm (TSP) is designed, a failure monitoring of variable cycle algorithm (VPP) is improved, the alarm oscillation phenomenon of failure monitoring is described, and the corresponding warning oscillation offset algorithm is proposed. NFMS is on the basis of modular design, has better scalability. The main functions of NFMS includes: equipment management, user management, equipment data collection, data warehousing, threshold settings, failure to receive, traffic monitoring, performance monitoring, topology discovery, Mib browse, statements statistics, log management, and so on. Finally, this paper gives the test results and performance of NFMS system, makes the summary and prospects of the research.
