Design And Implementation Of A Network Fault Management System

Modern networks have grown in complexity beyond the point where they can be managed by a manual process alone. This complexity gave rise to automated network management systems that interact with network elements to gain data about their behavior and performance, and to control their behavior by setting operational parameters. Several protocols have been proposed for the interaction between network elements and network management systems. At present, the simple network management protocol (SNMP) is the most accepted and deployed. Keep the network in healthy state is the point admin concerns most. And the need for a robust solution to network failure has become critical in today's networked economy. Automating the network fault management process has become essential. The function of fault management is monitoring and collecting of statistics on network devices, traffic conditions and usage in real-time to avoid and forecast potential faults, setting thresholds and alarms that may cause network failure to warn the network admin. Then determine the cause, log, notify users of, and (to the extent possible) automatically fix network problems to keep the network running effectively. The objectives of doing fault management are to increase network availability, reduce network downtime and restore network failure quickly. Because faults can cause downtime or unacceptable network degradation, fault management is perhaps the most widely implemented of the ISO network management elements.This paper addresses a framework of automating fault management for IP network provides event, alarm, and reporting capabilities.
