Based on a campus network, the main goal of this paper is to set up a network monitoring system, which operates on campus area and meet the need of the network The main research work is as follows:(1) The background of network monitoring system and present situation at home and abroad is introduced. And the related theories, the technologies and the main targets are also described.(2) The Cacti structure principle and workflow, the Cacti system for secondary development, including the system module, such as voice alarm, SMS alarm based on the original model are analyzed. The campus network weather chart is drawn to learn the whole network flow status in an intuitive and convenient view. The monitor of the temperature and humidity in the data center is realized by using sensor. The relational database is used to collect performance data to realize data persistent preservation, and to improve the Cacti data storage mode.(3)The monitoring effects of this system plays in actual campus environment is shown and the research result of this paper is summarized, which also proposed the directions of future work.This system realizes the effective campus network monitoring through the open source network monitoring software Cacti, and provides the solutions, which are based on open source software for further study and design of campus network. It also reduces the cost of development and shortens the development cycle, so it’s a new mode of monitoring system design and of good application value.
