Coal production safety situation have been not only constraining the development of the coal industry, but also threatening the coal staff's health and safety for a long time. In order to prevent the occurrence of significant accidents, we must use modern electronics technology, communications technology and computer network technology to monitor mine gas concentration, pressure and other parameters effectively . Presently, real-time monitoring of mine has been weakest link in mine production. Initial investment is huge if we use cables or fiber cable to carry on the long-distance mine safety monitoring. Local township coal mines do not have conditions to access with cables or fiber cable for wide distribution and country position. In recent years, long-distance wireless communications system, because of small investment, quick effect and easy maintenance, has been used in coal mine safety supervision. GPRS, with its features of wide coverage and charging by flow, quickly access to practical stage. GPRS realize the unified control of many coals in the same area, however, the mine leaders who is responsible for safety do not know the gas concentration in mine. This paper proposes a coal mine monitoring system based GSM/GPRS. The system is highly modular.Data transmission terminals achieve both SMS and GPRS data transmission mode. Data transmission terminals and underground monitoring stations separate, ensuring the system scalability and compatibility. The system can not only monitor many coals in an area with the same center, but also pass alarm messages to the workers in time.Data transmission terminals achieve the GPRS and SMS data transmission mode by ARM7 processor and MC35i. This paper describes the application and design of GPRS and SMS data transmission in the coal mine safety monitoring system, including messaging program development, the application of PPP link layer and ulP transplant.Experimental study on this system tested feasibility of the data transmission terminal. The mine safety monitoring system based on GPRS and SMS communication have some characteristic such small investment, high reliability and easy maintenance. This system will be able to monitor and share some critical data such as gas concentration and enhance rapid response capability.
