Based on the advanced technologies of digital communication, source and channel coding, Digital High Definition Television (Digital HDTV) has been one of the focuses of the world's competition in high technology, and it would gradually substitute the existing analogue television system…Currently, HDTV system has stepped out from scientific research phase and into a commercial phase in the global world. And also, in our country, researches in HDTV system and applications have accomplished many achievements.Because QAM has the same outer coder circuitry as VSB, this paper focused on the principles of the VSB channel implementation in ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) of receiver of ATSC-HDTV Terrestrial Transmission Subsystem. The paper discusses the part of ASIC design of TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) in HDTV 8VSB terrestrial channel broadcasting receiver chip. In testing, the TCM can improve the Signal-to-Noise by 3.3dB compared with uncoded 4-VSB modulation, and with the 12 path interleaving in TCM coding and Viterbi decoding, system can control short burst noise error efficiently. The contents of this paper have included HDTV system information, system on chip design, TCM coding,Viterbi decoding and RS decoding.The principle of HDTV and its structure are introduced in this paper firstly, and then we describe every module algorithms and compare their advantages and shortcomings. Finally, we introduce the ASIC flow of ATSC. It is of great value in engineering application and is a good guide to theory study in the future.
