Nowadays High Definition Television (HDTV) has become the trend of Digital TV and many research relatively have been reported. In order to transmit and store information more effectively, it is very necessary that we should bring into effect the condensation and encoding to the digital signal of HDTV. As a new video encoding standard, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC has a higher compression ratio and a good adaptability to network, and be applied to resolve the condensation of HDTV video. With the development of multimedia industry, it will be used in a wide field.On the base of understanding video encoding arithmetic and principle of DTV the dissertation analyses encoding arithmetic used in the standard of H.264/AVC, and discuss the design tactics and design method of HDTV video decoding system. In the end, the other work is the primary system design of HDTV video decoder based on H.264/AVC and the hardware design of some function modules.The detailed contents of dissertation as follow. In chapter one it briefly introduces the concept of DTV, sample structures of video signal, encoding and the picture format and parameters of HDTV. In chapter two it discusses the theory of video condensation and encoding arithmetic, such as prediction encoding, transform encoding and entropy encoding. In chapter three it describes the contents and characteristics of H.264/AVC. In chapter four it discusses the design tactics of high performance video decoder, and brings forward the design method of HDTV video decoding system based on H.264/AVC. In chapter five it does the function analysis, module partition and system verification platform for HDTV video coding system. In chapter six it accomplishes the hardware design of some modules as 4*4 integral transform and quantization core and CAVLC, CABAC entropy encoding etc.The dissertation comes down to the system design and circuit design for video decoding system. It can provide some help for the multimedia SOC design.
