A free newspaper was launched in Guangzhou. The giveaway newspaper is thelatest in a growing number of such papers that have appeared across the world. Thisarticle will take it as a research object, and base on the development of the foreignfree newspapers. This thesis will dig in the background of it's appearance, where'rethe market environment, the media environment and the environment of the audience.Because of the differences of existing policies and the development status, the freenewspapers in China are different from the foreign's. So this article will summarize oftheir common ground and differences. It will focus on analyzing the differences ofmarket position between the free newspaper and paid newspaper on the aspects ofaudience, distribution channels and advertising customers, etc. Two Metro newspaperin our country will be taken as examples. They are "Metro Express" in Shanghai and"Guangzhou Metro Daily" in Guangzhou. Because of the small page size of Metro,which very suit for people to read during the short MTR joumey, lead they can knowwhat's happening in the world. Free metro newspapers are the new frontier in thenewspaper market. And the advertisers are attracted by the relatively high purchasingpower of subway passengers. Trough them, we can find out the existence of it'sbottleneck problems and explore the development trends.Taking a panoramic view of the newspaper market in recent years, whenever thefree newspaper is starting or press management mechanism is reforming, allindications show that newspaper market in China still has it's strong vitality and broaddevelopment space. Therefore, the author believes that free newspapers may be thefuture of Chinese newspapers. However, it is not the winner within two or severalyears. We still need to embark on a long and arduous road. We still need the innovatorto examine the rational development of the free press and opportunities facing thebottleneck. Thinking out the strategic solutions to enable the free newspaper todevelop and grow.
