With the development of city civilization process increasingly convenient, subway has become the lifeblood of city transportation. Dependent on the metro systems, most of the metro newspapers are distributed free. Additionally, as subways radiate in all directions, metro newspapers are accessible easily to all the readers. There are only two brands of regular metro newspapers with standard serial numbers in Shanghai where the metro newspapers start to develop at the earliest throughout the country. One is Shanghai Metro Express with 11 years of history and the other is a weekly newspaper named Shanghai Xinmin Metro which started publication less than four years ago. Sharing one channel from different levels and following by the competing philosophy of differentiation, these two brands are specialized respectively in news information and services for life in order to struggle for the market and segment the readers. Thus, regarding these two leading metro newspapers as research subjects, this paper attempts to explore the living environment and developing course of the metro newspaper.Compared to the charging newspapers impacted and suffered dramatically by the new generated media, metro newspapers, also as a kind of paper media, due to their advantages--- free of charge and channels---are still competitive under the current circumstances. Admittedly, the development of metro newspaper is benefited a lot from its price advantage---free of charge. However, it is also constrained by this policy to some extent. So these two subway newspapers are always obsessed with the difficulties in cost and talents. In addition, similarly, channel advantage is often frustrated by the city gleans and collects scraps people.Actually, there is no doubt that Shanghai United Media Group established in the end of 2013 would influence the development of the two metro newspapers. Such new media environment might generate indefinite factors and meanwhile new chances for them as well. Therefore, how the metro newspaper would be affected and restricted by the new media environment and how the metro newspaper could be adapted to it is also addressed in this paper.
