Because of the quickly increasing market of low-rate wireless personal area network, ZigBee is developing at a high speed in recent years. It is specified to operate in the 868 MHz, 915 MHz and 2.4 GHz ISM bands. It is a low data rate (20 to 250 kbps). Because of its low rate, low power consume, low cost and short range, ZigBee can be used well in home automation, building automation, industry control, medical treating nursing, wireless control and wireless sensor network. The supporters of ZigBee have established ZigBee Alliance. It's responsible for making the standard, promoting the ZigBee protocol, testing the ZigBee product.Following the standard Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, ZigBee's protocol stack is structured in layers. The first two layers, physical (PHY) and media access (MAC), are defined by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The layers above them are defined by the ZigBee Alliance. The paper introduced the Zigbee protocol stack first, including ZigBee device and ZigBee network. Then it analyzed the ZigBee stack in detail by ZigBee specification and IEEE 802.15.4 standard. After that, it described the hardware design and the protocol porting of the ZigBee embedded system based on NXP LPC210x CPU (ARM7TDMI-S core) and Chipcon CC2410 RF IC. Researched on the Microchip ZigBee stack for PIC MCU, modified the driver (including data structure, interrupt, timing and interface between MCU and RF IC, etc.) and ported the ZigBee stack to this system.
