The Grid is a mass network computing system. Actually it is a virtual super computer by sharing and co-operating all kinds of distributed computing and storage resources all around the world. All the times, it is motivated by the tremendous desire of computing power in the fields of science, technology, and so on. And nowadays Gird has already been able to supply different services besides computing resources.In order to implement high usability, robustness and high performance of Gird, it is essential to monitor Grid properly and effectively. Grid monitoring is the process that collecting information about the characters and status of the resources in Grid. And it is the precondition of Grid management.Presently, there are lots of institutions and organizations working in the field of grid monitoring. However, the research production being received abroad isn't much. The challenges are: there are some problems in the interoperation and expansibility of the methods which is used to describe monitoring information; the dynamic and distributed characters of Grid bring great complexity and difficulty to the grid node management. Base on these reasons, the thesis analyzed the designing requirement of grid monitoring system and existing technologies of grid monitoring. GMA (Grid Monitoring Architecture) standard and some resource description models are used for reference. The thesis advanced a plan to describe monitoring information and manage grid nodes in R-Net monitoring system, ultimately completed a functional and steady-going module of grid monitoring system.This thesis first introduced the concept, significance and requirement of grid monitoring system, consequently elicited the content and goal of the research. Then the thesis introduced some technologies about grid monitoring system including GMA which is advocated by GGF (Global Grid Forum), strongpoint and disadvantages of several existing grid monitoring software.
