Remote environmental data monitoring is a specific application of the digital environment protection, in which onsite data monitoring terminal is a key component. This thesis analyzed the industrial needs for digital environmental protection, designed and implemented an embedded remote environmental data monitoring system, and thus investigated the use of embedded system in onsite data monitoring application. This system involves the data collection of analog and digital signals, and the transmission of data through channels such as GPRS/CDMA, PSTN, Ethernet and others. The main studies include the following:(1) According to industry needs, cost, technology and other factors, we studied the architecture of the remote environmental monitoring system, designed the schemes for data collection terminals and data transmission. By comparing the performances of market available hardware and software products, we determined the hardware and software platform for the data terminals. This not only effectively ensured the system performance but also saved cost.(2) We designed the software system for the embedded remote data terminal. We analyzed the roles and use cases of the system, divided the system into functional modules, and designed each module, analyzed the dataflow and designed data structure and algorithms. The system design work not only guaranteed the performance, but also would help system maintenance.(3) We provided technical solutions for specific problems for the embedded data monitoring terminal. We developed hardware drivers for the data terminal, designed and implemented a unified interruption management system, implemented supports for multiple means of communication, provided solusion for the problem of multi-point data accesses, implemented the recovery mechanism of Ethernet connectivity. By solving these technical problems, the system performance effectively improved.(4) We studied and implemented the data transmission protocol for remote data terminals. We participated in the realization and testing the data communication protocol. The protocol has now become a national standard of the People's Republic of China. The protocol 'Data transmission standard of online pollution source monitoring system', No. HJ/T212-2005, has been announced to be effective from February 1, 2006, by State Administration of Environmental Protection in Notice No. 66, 2005.The achievement of the research projects has been applied in real applications afterrepeated testing. It has been successfully applied in a number of enterprise-levelenvironmental online monitoring systems, and has been shown good performance. All thedesigned performance indexes have been achieved.
