With the coming of information period and the integrative economy of the whole world, steel enterprises are confronted with more severe competition. To gain advantage in this competition, steel enterprises must strengthen their real-time and high efficient production management along with their development of production agility, continuity and automation. However, the traditional production management theories are mainly about macro-planning, lacking support for the bottom data collection and the direct control of the production process, also the existed information systems are usually short of conmunication and resource share, which finally leads to the so called phenomena of "Information Island".MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a management information system for the workshop layer, which lies in the production manufacturing process between! the the upper layer of plan-management and the ground floor layer of industrial control. It provides workshop managers with real-time information about the product planning, product tracing resource allocation and so on. It also controls the production process and guarantees the production process in order. MES is a bridge that spans and fills up the gap between the planning systems and direct industrial controls. It is becoming an effective method for the product management and the workshop floor control.On the bases of an in-depth study of the theories of MIS, MES and the technology of information integration for distributed heterogeneous data sources, this paper analyzed the demand of steel enterprise's MES based production MIS for the query of production real-time data and for the integration of distributed heterogeneous data sources. A system structure model by using of real- time relation database as bottom data platform and XML mediator as soft information integration bus was presented, which established a feasible solution for the system realization from the building of bottom data platform, direct communication of ERP/MES/PCS, to the information integration of distributed systems. Finally, a production management system was developed and realized into software.Based on the advanced management theories, the system software is developed upon the core technologies of real-time relation database and XML with .NET Framework and three-layer C/S architecture. By use of this system, production status can be tracked in real time, the mutual communication of upper management information and bottom production data becomes true, this software also satisfies the integration demand of distributedheterogeneous data sources, improves the level of enterprise's production control and management.
