Intensive development, a concern in recent years, is one of the main means of thedevelopment of China's publishing houses. However, the relevant theoretical researchaccomplishment is also unusual. The issues, such as meaning, nature, laws and empiricalanalysis of intensive development of publishing houses, have not been fully explored. Tosome extent, this constrains intensive development of publishing houses for the practice.At present, China's overall social development comes into the new stage: acomprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development. The cultural reform continuesfurther. The creative industries are becoming the focus of economical development. So, forpublishing houses, it is right time to develop itself intensively. Based on those facts, thepaper adopts relevant theories of management and economics in order to make anexploratory study of the pattern, by the methods of summarizing, comparing, historicanalyzing and empirical analyzing.The main content of this paper is divided into four sections. The first section recallsthe evolutional history of publishing houses' Intensive development, and makes an overviewof the status of their research. Furthermore, submits the basic content of the pattern ofpublishing houses' intensive development. Subsequently, on the base of practical materials,by using of empirical analysis, divides publishing houses choosing the pattern into threetypes (the type of public and omnibus publishing, the type of educational and academicpublishing , the type of professional and technical publishing), seven models. It alsoanalyzes their development characteristics. In the third part of this paper, concludes ninespecific elements of the pattern from the perspective of business functions of corporations,and analyzes the content and the interaction of elements. Then, how to construct thepattern is studied. After this, outlines realistic difficulties of this pattern and forecasts itsmacro trends. In part four, the paper explores further the pattern from another perspective,the core competence. And the consistency is analyzed between enhancing the corecompetence and intensive development. In the end, makes a conclusion that enhancing thecore competence is the inevitable choice for publishing houses if they want to transcendfrom intensive development to sustainable development.
