Chinese University Uress had a development path with tortuous and difficulty. In China, the oldest university publishers was the Nanyang Translation Academy dating bake to 1898,and the University Press of the true sense was the Chinese People's University Press setting in 1955. During the turmoil of Cultural Revolution, the newly established University Press fell into a dark ravine.?After the reform and opening up, University Press enter a stage for widely creation, in order to support the rapid development of higher education.?In the more than 30 years since reform and opening up, the University Press has become to be an new power of the publishing industry, especially playing a pivotal role in academic publishing.University Press, as an integral part of the university, its main function is to serve university education and academic research. Although there are some differences among the background, history, and development mode, their basic task and localization are interlinked: academic publishing and the teaching and research service. Scholarly publishing, the University Press should stick to the publication mission in any historical period. However, due to various factors and limits, the academic publishing is full of numerous difficulties, not entirely optimistic.Recently, published environment was changed by institutional & digital transformation, publication collectivized, and capital diversified. The University Press is facing a more severe test. Particularly, the scholarly publishing suffers the hardest hit. For a long time, publisher and scholars considered that the scholarly publishing shouldn't be market-oriented. The institutional transformation offered the University Press a new opportunity to choice more publishing resources in a broader market space.Because of institutional constraints, University Press wasn't strong with market awareness and not good at management. In the fierce marketing competition, University Press has no advantage comparing with other commercial publishers. University Press needs to find its own unique characteristics, and build core competence. After a comprehensive analysis, University Press's core competitiveness is its own brand. It can promote the development of scholarly publishing through the core value.
