Forest resource is a renewable, changing and dynamic biological resource. With the proceeding of forest activities, the changes of forest resources were effected by the deforestation, species update, forest plantation, timber theft, natural disasters and the natural growth. In order to manage forest resources effectively and provide the latest data to users, it must use scientific means to manage the forest resource dynamically. In recent years, with the rapid development of computer network technology and the mature of GIS theory, there is a new application technology of GIS-WebGIS. WebGIS is a combination production of Internet and GIS. The users can browse the spatial data, produce the theme map and make a variety of spatial search and analysis operations from any node of web. Introducing WebGIS technology into the traditional forest resource management to improve the management efficiency is the aim of this study. The study achieves the network share and dynamic update of forest resources, builds the bridge between forest resource and activities and supports the planning and decision of forestry production.In the paper, we take the Yichun Langxiang Forestry Bureau as the research object, take the spatial and attribute data of Langxing as the basic data, take the ArcGIS Server 9.2 as the application platform, take the.Net and database as the development technology to develop the forest resource update system based on WebGIS. Firstly, the paper studies the correlation theory and technology of WebGIS including the basic principles, implementation method, features and functionalities and the architecture and features of ArcGIS Server. Then the paper studies the related theories and models of the forest resource update and designs the updating process of forest data. Langxing area is selected as experimental area of the system. Based on the investigation, combined with satellite imagery and digital map, this paper completes data vector of experimental regional with ArcGIS Desktop software, and it also produces the basic data meeting the system requirements. Finally, the forest resource update system is developed by using.Net and WebGIS technology, including map operation, forest resource search, forest resource update, theme map, and other modules.The system takes the Yichun Langxiang area as demonstration sites and completes the update of forest volume. The results show that the system improves the deficiencies of traditional forest resource management, achieves the network share and dynamic update of forest resources and makes the forest production data consistency with the field.
