With the development of science and technology and a higher level of industrial automation in modern society, the application in video surveillance technology has extended from the initial industrial and agriculture production, transportation, security and other fileds to some areas with special requirements on the video surveillance. And some special requirements are needed in the volume and flexibility of monitoring equipments. Traditional video surveillance technology is mainly based on PC or DSP and other dedicated chips. This kind of equipments has all functions, but they are bulky, expensive and inflexible, which limits their applications. Today, video surveillance is developed to low-cost, miniaturized, highly flexible. The video surveillance technology based on programmable logic devices has been developed rapidly in recent years, with high-speed, highly integrated, programmable, low-cost and other advantages. This technology shortens the development cycle of digital system, improves the flexibility and reliability of system design. So it has good application and prospects.After analyzing various and available video surveillance technology, the implementation of multi-channel video acquisition system based on FPGA will be showed in this article. This system uses Altera's FPGA Cycloneâ…¡series as the central control chip which is made up of the video capture module, the video decoding module, the storage control module, display control module and the configuration circuits. Under the control of the first FPGA, four analog video signals coming from the camera decode into digital signals through 4 video decoder chips. And then these digital signals are transmitted to the second FPGA which completes video data storage, color space conversion and the design of display controller. According to the requirements of display timing, the data in memory are read one by one, and eventually displayed on the LCD or VGA and they can control 4 screens to switch or be displayed simultaneously. This article focuses on how to implement multi-channel video signal acquisition, decoding, storage and display in the form of logic circuits. And every module is integrated in this two FPGA. According to the requirements, video channel can be switched. This design of the integrated software on the hardware shows completely the FPGA characteristics of parallel processing data. So that the system is with good real-time. This design will combine with the FPGA's flexibility so as to complement parametric programming. In this situation, different demands can be achieved as long as we change the parameters. After testing, in the multi-channel video acquisition system, the operation of the software and hardware is stable, which reaches the target.
