With the quick development of IC industry, Digital Signal Processor (DSP) has been advanced enormously in many fields, such as manufacturing process, architecture. With the development of technology and the increment of capability/price, DSP has been widely used for digital signal processing applications in the fields of communication, control, multimedia and so on. Multimedia applications also greatly promote the development of DSP. The standout performance, the special architecture, powerful processing capability, as well as low power consumption, makes DSP most suitable for the future multimedia application.This paper describe a DSP processor - MD16, which is developed by the Department ofInformation Science and Electronic Engineering in Zhejiang University. MD16's core has a data-width of 16 bits and an instruction-width of 24 bits with all the instructions completed within a four-stage pipeline. There are two RAM (program memory and data memory) in the core of MD16. Two dimensions accessing memory can support to access two data at one time, which benefits the FIR,IIR,FFT arithmetic and so on. This DSP is realized in a 0.18um CMOS technology and can work at above 160MHz.The instructions of MD16 are designed for digital process, which have rich instruction address mode and instruction operation. To be more fit for multi-media application , it need to improve the parallel ability of MDI6.S0 we adopt the part parallel technology in the design of MD16,which means one instruction many operations. We also proposed part SIMD, which means one instruction operation much data .We designed a divided ALU and correspond instruction to support the technology.I/O system is most important part of DSP system. The bus is designed suiting for MD16's application. We discuss the multilevel bus of multilevel memory system and network on chip. The DMA controller of MD 16 is used as not only a normal DMA but also booting the system. We contrast the design of MD16 DSP's DMA controller with the design of MD32 DSP's DMA controller not only in software view but also in hardware view . It develops a method of designing DMAC based on DSP in the co-design view of hardware and software.To test DSP, on the one hand we need testable design, on the other hand we need a test platform. The test platform of MD16 are divided into two part: soft platform and hard platform. As Universal Serial Bus has characteristics of reliable transfer, high speed, flexible, convenience and so on, USB is a better choose than parallel port as a communication interface between soft platform and hard platform. The test of MD16 is accomplished by exchange of data between MD16 and soft platform through USB.
