A Research On The Architectural Space Of Townhouse

This paper starts with a clear definition of Townhouse and architectural space of single unit, then describes the close relationship between the dwelling space and the living pattern, in which they interact, inter-promote and coexist. Based on this fact, the history of Townhouse, a western traditional residential style, is described, which are hundreds years'process of developing and changing. And then the features of architectural space and the familiar patterns of function organization are summarized, according to the analysis and comparison to the typical examples of different periods. Furthermore, the recent developing tends of Townhouse are classified and described. In the last section, this paper directs the attention to our country, divides the developing process of Townhouse in China into three phases in chronological order, and summarizes the corresponding characters of each phase, to lay stress on the status quo. At last some pointed suggestions ate put forward. It's hoped that this paper could offer some help to the design of the Townhouse in the future and the further research in related fields.
