Employment is the most fundamental aspect of people’s livelihood and is a matter of social stability and people’s well-being.The Party and the Government attach great importance to the issue of employment.The report of the 20 th Party Congress points out that we should strengthen the employment priority policy,improve the employment promotion mechanism and promote quality and full employment,which gives us a direction to promote employment work.In the process of quality and full employment,the improvement of employment quality is a part of the process that cannot be ignored.As a new economic form,the digital economy has a profound impact on the quality of employment,and it has become a priority task to clarify the internal logical relationship between the digital economy and the improvement of employment quality,which is of great importance to further improve the quality of employment in China.This paper first reviews the relevant literature and theoretical foundations on the digital economy and employment quality,and defines the concept.Secondly,based on the definition of employment quality,a comprehensive employment quality index system is constructed from five aspects: employment status,employ ability,employment environment,labour remuneration and labour protection,and the entropy value method is used to measure and analyse the employment quality of 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2021.The mechanism of the development of the digital economy on employment quality is then sorted out through the theories of endogenous economic growth,human capital and viability.Finally,using the measured employment quality of each province as the explanatory variable and the digital economy development index as the core explanatory variable,an empirical analysis is conducted using static panel data models and mediating effect models.The study found that:(1)China’s overall employment quality composite index is low,and the employment quality varies significantly among provinces,but the trend of change shows that the employment quality of China’s provinces shows a steady upward trend in general.(2)The development of the digital economy has a significant positive effect on employment quality and can promote employment quality;further mechanism tests found that the digital economy can improve employment quality by optimizing the employment structure,and the employment structure plays a mediating role between the development of the digital economy and employment quality.(3)The heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of digital economy development on the quality of employment is more significant in the eastern region,while the impact on the central and western regions is not significant.Based on the above findings,and taking into account the current situation of digital economy development,this paper puts forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions:(1)vigorously develop the digital economy to narrow the differences in employment quality among regions;(2)leverage the development of the digital economy to help optimize and upgrade the employment structure;(3)improve the multi-level social security system to achieve higher quality employment.
