In language learning,learning motivation is one of the important factors that affect second language learning,which not only affects the degree of learners’ efforts but also affects the persistence of learners’ learning.Studying the motivation of Chinese learners in Papua New Guinea(ereinafter referred to as “PNG”)will not only help to understand their attitude and demand for Chinese,but also provide targeted suggestions and strategies based on the survey results,so as to improve the learning motivation of Chinese learners in PNG,and further expand the cause of Chinese teaching in PNG.Based on D(?)rnyei’s three-dimensional framework of foreign language learning motivation and Gardner and Lambert’s motivation theory,this paper takes Chinese learners in PNG as the study object,makes a statistical analysis of the collected valid questionnaires through questionnaires and interviews,and uses SPSS 26.0 and Excel to explore the learners’ Chinese learning motivation.Meanwhile,the learning motivation of Chinese learners in PNG is analyzed in this paper from five factors(gender,age,education,occupation,the time of learning Chinese),and according to the survey results,strategies to improve their learning motivation are presented.This paper is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction,which mainly expounds on the reason and significance of the topic selection,study status,the theoretical basis and study methods.The second part is the survey design of learning motivation of Chinese learners in PNG,which is divided into questionnaire design and interview design.The third part is the analysis of the survey results of Chinese learners’ learning motivation in PNG,including the basic situation of the respondents,the overall situation of learning motivation,the types of learning motivation,the related factors and learning motivation,and the results of interviews.The survey show that: Firstly,PNG has a strong motivation to learn Chinese in general,with the strongest motivation at the language level and the weakest motivation at the learner level.Secondly,there are significant differences between students of different gender in self-confidence motivation at the learner level and teacher motivation at the learning situation level.Thirdly,there are significant differences in achievement-needed motivation among students of different ages at the learner level.Fourthly,there is no significant difference in educational,occupation,and the time of learning Chinese among different motivation types.The fourth part is the strategies to improve the learning motivation of Chinese learners in PNG.Based on the results of survey,this paper puts forward some suggestions and countermeasures from three aspects: learners,teachers and Confucius Institutes.The fifth part summarizes the study conclusions and points out the shortcomings and limitations of the study.
