Poverty alleviation area in western Yunnan includes contiguous regions with special difficulties along the border of the province.With the largest number of border counties and ethnic minorities,it is the main battlefield of a new round of national poverty alleviation.Due to mountainous terrain,inconvenient transportation and remote location,the economy and education has not been fully developed.Therefore,the author investigates on the current situation and influencing factors of English learning motivation of high school students in this area.This research intends to give answers to the following questions:(1)What is the current situation of middle school students’ English learning motivation in the poverty alleviation area of western Yunnan?(2)What are the factors that affect the motivation of middle school students’ English learning in this area?(3)What are the differences of learning motivation and influencing factors in terms of group? To answer the above questions,discussion is made from the following perspectives:(1)What are the types of English learning motivation and influencing factor,and the intensity of them.(2)How do the factors exert influence on motivation,positive or not,obvious or not.(3)How do the motivation and influencing factors variate in terms of group.Through questionnaire to 429 students and SPSS 24.0 the data is measured and analyzed.The results show that:(1)Compared with achievement motivation,middle school students’ developmental motivation is stronger,thus they focus on English as an instrument for future development.(2)Students themself as factor have the strongest influence on their motivation.(3)Compared with teachers and teaching factors,students themselves and environmental factors have a significant impact on all kinds of motivation,which shows that students improve their learning under the interaction between themselves and the surrounding environment,while their dependence on teachers is gradually weakening.(4)In terms of group,the motivation intensity of female students is higher than that of male students;ethnic minorities is higher than Han ethnic group;junior high school students is higher than that of senior high school students.(5)About influencing factors in terms of group,girls are more likely to be affected by various factors than boys;junior high school students are more likely to be affected by various factors than senior high school students.From this,it can be seen that the discovery has certain enlightenment on English education in the region,promotes the improvement of teaching and learning,and has certain theoretical significance and practical value for English teaching reform in western Yunnan.
