Applied linguistics,as one of the most rapidly developing branches in the field of linguistics,applies the knowledge of linguistics to solve problems in other scientific fields,and plays a mediating role in the discipline and application.The translation of relevant academic books can facilitate the understanding of the cutting-edge research results and promote academic exchanges between China and foreign countries.The Routledge Handbook of Applied Linguistics,the source text of this translation practice report,provides a comprehensive overview of key topics in applied linguistics and introduces important theories and practice in the field.Thus,the translation of this handbook is the ideal teaching material for graduates and researchers specializing in applied linguistics.The author of this report,as a member of the translation team,undertook the translation task of Chapter 2 of “ Language Teaching Methods ” in The Routledge Handbook of Applied Linguistics,with a total of about 11,004 words.The language of this part is highly academic and logical,with complex syntactic and textual structures.In view of these textual features,this report takes the functional Skopos Theory as the theoretical guide to analyze and solve the problems encountered in the translation process,including the understanding and translation of specific words in headings,polysemy,technical terms and other lexical items on the lexical level;attributive clauses,adverbial clauses and other syntactic structures on the syntactic level;the means of cohesion and coherence to reflect logical relationships on the textual level.In terms of lexical items translation,attention should be paid to accuracy,standardization,unity and readability.As to attributive clauses and adverbial clauses and other syntactic structures,the translation should be true to the original text,but the degree and the form of fidelity are determined by the purpose of the translation and the translator’s understanding of the original text.On the textual level,the translator should consider re-expressing the original information in a language suitable for the target language readers,which requires not only lexical transformation,but also some corresponding strategies to reorganize the cohesion of the translated text so as to achieve coherence of the text.It is hoped that the report will provide some references for translation practice and translation research concerning the translation of academic works,especially in the field of applied linguistics.
