A Report On The Translation Of The Routledge Handbook Of Stylistics(Chapter17 To Chapter18)

This thesis is an E-C translation report.The translation practice is selected from the chapters 17 and 18 of The Routledge Handbook of Stylistics by Michael Burke and other scholars,in which the authors systematically introduce the main theories and development directions of stylistics,and explain the basic principles of various stylistic theories through concrete examples.The book scientifically summarizes the present and future of Western stylistics,which not only helps readers understand stylistics,but also provides reference for the development of stylistics in China.Being an informative text,the source text aims to enhance readers’ understanding of stylistics.It contains many case descriptions and demonstrations,and is characterized by various terms,complex sentences and logic thinking.As a result,the crux translator comes across is how to transform specific words and complex sentences into accurate and fluent translation.Specifically,the difficulty at the lexical level is the translation of terms and specific words;at the sentence level,it is the processing of long and complex sentences;at the discourse level,it becomes the cohesion between sentences or paragraphs.In view of this,the translator believes that the translation should be accurate and readable.Therefore,under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the translator decides to deploy translation skills such as part of speech conversion,division and addition to solve the above difficulties.As the report suggests,a translator needs to have solid language strength and rich multi-domain expertise;it is also necessary for a translator to master some important translation theories and to try various text types,which is conducive to improving the translators’ translation skills.Based on the experience of the academic translation,the author hopes that the report can inspire other translators on translating academic text.
