Over the decades, the studies of pragmatics have flourished in China, and the theory of pragmatics has played a very important role in translation studies in China. The source text“Cognitive Pragmatics and Translation Studies” is selected from the book The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Pragmatics, which is edited by Rebecca Tipton and Louisa Desilla and published by Routledge. The source text provides a detailed account of Relevance Theory in cognitive linguistics and its application in translation, providing some guidance and inspiration for our understanding of pragmatic translation studies. The whole book is a compilation of academic papers, which are informative texts containing a large number of pragmatic professional concepts, many passive sentences and long sentences, and complex paragraphs. Therefore, this translation practice report is guided by the theory of communicative translation, aiming to make the translation fluent and easy to understand for the target readers. The author adopted specific translation methods such as addition, division, changing lexical meaning, reorganizing structural order, and etc.The important issues and difficult points are analyzed on three levels: vocabulary, syntax and discourse. The feasibility of the theory of communicative translation for the translation of this academic paper is explored.Through this translation practice, the author has gained experience in translating academic papers and broadened professional knowledge. As a case study, the author aims to provide some reference for the English-Chinese translation of similar texts.
