Some domestic tourism cities have recently struggled with delayed development, thus they should draw lessons from the international advanced experience and employ available strategies in a timely manner.Academic works provide useful insight for scholars to understand the most cutting-edge research and experience, and drive the development of related industries. This translation material is an excerpt from chapters30-31 of the Routledge Handbook of Tourism Cities, which is a well-known academic work on tourism. It belongs to an informative text covering a group of scholars’ insight on the transformation and innovation of tourist cities in the United States and Latin America. The translation material is formal, professional and logical with numerous long sentences, and thus requires translation variations. With the guidance of the Translation Variation Theory proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian, this translation report analyses the translation techniques of informative texts in combination with specific cases. On the basis of accurate understanding of the original text, the translator adopts five different variation techniques, including “amplification”,“compilation”,“remodeling”,“omission” and“combination”.Specifically, the translator interprets obscure tourism terms and proper nouns by means of “amplification”.For the difficulty of translating long sentences, the translator reconstructs the sentence structure by means of “compilation”.For the difficulties of translating parallel structures and nominalized structures, the translator skillfully uses the four-character structure and part-of-speech conversion by means of“remodeling”.Additionally, due to the differences between Chinese and Western thinking habits, the translator deletes the secondary information by means of “omission”,and combines the related components by means of “combination”.The application of variation techniques makes the target text more in line with the target language habits and improves the translation quality of informative texts. This translation practice indicates that the Translation Variation Theory can effectively solve the difficulties in the translation of informative texts, meet the requirements of the target readers, and enhance the readability of the target text.It is anticipated that this report will provide some theoretical and practical values for tourism professionals as well as feasible translation methods for translators of this type of text. |
