The Routledge Handbook of Forensic Linguistics 2ndEd.is an instrumental reference book for the study of legal linguistics, which is divided into“The language of the law and the legal process”,“The linguists as expert in the legal processes”and“New directions”.Each contains papers written by experts in different fields, introducing the core issues and research topics in contemporary legal linguistics. In this translation practice, the 15th and 16th papers incorporated in the first section,“The language of the law and the legal process”,are selected as the translation materials.Based on the types of legal texts proposed by Susan?ar?evi?and Deborah Cao,the translator confirms that the translated materials are purely descriptive and academic legal texts, and thus carries out translation practice under the guidance of academic translation and legal translation principles. In the source texts, parenthesis is used frequently, but there is rare research on the translation strategies of parenthesis of such academic texts. So the translator analyzes from this perspective based on Halliday’s three metafunctions, drawing a conclusion:when translating those function ideationally, use different strategies based on different elements of the transitivity system;for those function interpersonally, maintain the original word order;for those function textually, restructuring.Through this translation practice, the translator learns more about the classification, translation difficulties, and translation strategies of parenthesis in academic legal texts. The author hopes that this translation report and reflection can provide some experience and reference for translating parenthesis of such texts in the future.
