With the calling of the new era, there has been an uptrend in China’s academic paper translation research.By checking the professional academic resources website like China National Knowledge Internet and Wanfang Database we can observe that the research on English-Chinese paper translation are not enough and lack attention in the translation field.Under such circumstances, this thesis focuses on the English-Chinese translation of academic papers. The source text of this E-C translation project is The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Translation, and the 21 st paper “REVOLUTIONARY ROAD Ibsen, translation, modern Chinese history” offers the examples that illustrate relevant translation strategies and skills. The writing style of the original text is rigorous and lively. Therefore, during the translation process, both “fidelity” to the paper and “readability” to the readers must be taken into consideration. This E-C translation practice was guided by translation shifts theory, which was put forward by a famous linguist J.C.Catford from England. In the process of translation, according to the key issues and difficult parts of the translation, case study and comparative analysis are used to summarize the translation strategies and skills applicable to this translation practice. In terms of grammar, the corresponding Chinese vocabulary is accurately selected to pass the meaning of the original text. From the perspective of vocabulary, the author aims to restore the wording characteristics of academic papers, not only to translate the meaning but also guarantee the preciseness. From the lexical level, the “pattern” and the “meaning” must be combined together, and the sentences are rearranged to ensure the smoothness of reading. From the aspect of context, the author focuses on the coherence and internal logic of the context,so as to achieve equivalence to the greatest extent. This translation practice explores the feasibility of English-Chinese translation of academic papers guided by translation shifts theory,in order to provide some reference for the same type of translation practice and the specific application of translation shifts theory.
