This thesis is a report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is taken from chapters 1 to 3 of Montenegro from Ancient Times to the Balkan Wars by Zivko M.ANDRIJASEVIC,Professor of Philosophy at the University of Montenegro. The source text is clear and lucid, with a serious and formal style of language that records historical facts and therefore uses mostly objective descriptive terms and long sentences, providing readers with an overview of Montenegro and helping them to explore the history of Montenegro comprehensively. The text for translation is a historical text with a large number of ancient place names,cultural-loaded words and special expressions, therefore,it is necessary to balance objectivity and aesthetics of literature at the same time during translation, which is also a difficult task in this translation practice.Based on the characteristics and difficulties of the source the translator, also the author,is guided by the theory of variation translation proposed by Huang Zhonglian,to solve most of specific problems encountered in the translation. The theory of variation translation requires the translator to adopt the seven methods of addition, deletion, edition, narration, condensation, combination and rewriting,in order to obtain the relevant content of the source text according to the relevant needs of a particular reader under specific conditions. In this translation practice, the translator uses six methods:addition, deletion, narration, condensation, combination, and rewriting to analyse the text at both lexical and syntactic levels. It is found that,at the lexical level, the methods of addition, deletion and narration can make the translation clear and fluent in order to meet the needs of specific readers;at the syntactic level, condensation, combination, and rewriting methods can be utilized to make the translation orderly and in line with the conventions of the target language. The translation of Montenegro from Ancient Times to the Balkan Wars will not only help more Chinese readers to understand the history and culture of Montenegro and promote the development of cross-cultural communication between China and Montenegro, but will also provide some reference value for the translation of historical texts.
