The thesis is a report on the author’s translation practice. The source text of the translation project is excerpted from the book Montenegro in the Flames of War:from the Balkan War to World War I,which takes time as the axis and focuses on the tortuous process of Montenegro joining the State of Yugoslavia after the war,as well as the composition of its society and political parties in the postwar period. The translation material is of historical text, characterized by both objectivity and literariness. As an important tool for recording and inheriting history, historical texts must truthfully record and objectively state historical facts,so as to ensure the scientificality, accuracy and objectivity of historical information. Therefore, its language style is serious, for which the use of words is rigorous, objective with less subjective emotion and fewer rhetorical devices, and the sentences are relatively long and complex. In some cases,in order to attract readers’ interest in reading, when describing some scenes, the writer also adopted some vivid verbs and metaphor to establish an emotional communication with readers. In the process of translating, the translator, also the author of the thesis, should not only put emphasis on the objectivity of the historical text, accurately conveying information of the original text, but also on its style and features,to achieve an accurate translation to the most extent. This report holds that Newmark’s theory of communication and semantic translation can play a vital role in guiding the translation of historical texts.Semantic translation is good to retain the unique style and language characteristics of the source text, while communicative translation allows the translator make suitable adjustments when the structure of the source text,if being translated directly,is hard for the target readers to comprehend so as to optimize the reader’s reading experience and achieve the purpose of accurately conveying information to target readers. In the process of translating, the historical text should be adjusted to fit the specific context.Under the guidance of the theory of communication and semantic translation, translation techniques such as transliteration, annotation and omission should be flexibly applied so that the translation can not only accurately convey the information of the original text, but also retain its language features as well as be more accord with the reading habits of the target language readers and better understood and accepted to the target readers.Eventually, the translation can achieve the purpose of introducing the history of Montenegro to the target readers and further promoting cultural exchanges between China and Montenegro.
