Montenegro,a country in the Belt&Road Initiative area,is not widely known to Chinese readers.With breakthroughs made in cooperation between Montenegro and China in recent years,people-to-people exchanges and cultural dialogues between the two countries will definitely be more frequent in the future.Thus,it is necessary to enhance mutual understanding between countries and their peoples and put forward higher requirements for the work in the area of people-to-people bond.As a newly independent country,Montenegro used to be one of the six members of the former Yugoslavia.Due to political,cultural and religious factors,the history of Montenegro has been highly disputed.The book Montenegro:A Modern History,written by Kenneth Morrison who went through various materials and interviewed witnesses of historical events in his book,features a high degree of objectivity,making it a reliable source for Chinese readers to understand the history of Montenegro.Based on the translation of Chapters 8,10 and 11 of Montenegro:A Modern History under the guidance of Skopos theory,this translation report is designed to explore the theoretical and practical guidance of Skopos theory on translation of historical documents from English to Chinese.It first introduces the background,significance and requirements of the translation task and features of text in historical documents,then moves to Skopos theory and its applicability to translation of historical documents,and finally analyzes specific examples to prove the role of Skopos theory in translation of historical documents.When translating historical documents,in consideration of knowledge,values,social and cultural environment of target-text receivers,i.e.Chinese readers in this case,the translator should balance English mode of thinking and Chinese mode of thinking and make the expression proper to Chinese habit after recognizing the original logical structure.To guarantee accuracy and readability of the target text,the translator should also avoid subjectivity as much as possible and overt interpretation of descriptions of historical events and figures in the original text,so as to contribute to successful cultural exchanges and communication.At the same time,to improve the quality and efficiency of translation,the translator should improve his/her competencies as a professional translator,including a good command of English and Chinese,a widened horizon of knowledge,effective utilization of translation tools and materials,as well as efficient teamwork and communication skills.
