With the rapid development of social economy, people’s living standard is improving day by day,and the quality requirements of the living environment are gradually increasing. Therefore, people pay more attention to environmental problems. The impact of the environment on human life can not be underestimated, and the implementation of correct environmental impact assessment is also an essential part of studying environmental problems. Thus,it is significant for the translation of environmental texts. This thesis is a practical report on E-C translation, and the author selects a chapter from Introduction to Environmental Impact Assessment as the source text, which is authored by three prestigious experts in environmental impact assessment. They are John Glasson,Riki Therivel,Andrew Chadwick. The source text is an environmental text, which belongs to scientific text.A large number of professional terms and abbreviations are used in the source text. Also passive voice, long and complex sentences are adopted extensively in the original text. The primary purpose of the translation practice is to convey professional knowledge about environmental impact assessment,so the author adopts the methods of text analysis, case analysis and comparative analysis before translation.Guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory, the author analyzes the difficulties in translation of vocabulary, and sentences. For the translation of environmental terms, literal translation and liberal translation are adopted to ensure the accuracy of terms as far as possible, retain the characteristics of the original text, and convey the information of the environmental text under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory. In terms of the passive voice, long and complex sentences in the environmental text, the translator mainly adopts the translation techniques such as division and restructuring to enhance the aesthetic value of the translation and make the expression more vivid. From this translation practice, the author thinks that understanding the environmental impact assessment is vital for us to study environmental texts, which can not only expand our knowledge of environmental issues, but also provide theoretical support for our environmental research. This report is presented with the hope that it may give other translators some suggestions when conducting English-Chinese translation of environmental texts.
