| Today,with the development of the Belt and Road Initiative of China,numerous countries are stepping forward and Montenegro is no exception.Amongst all the European countries,it is most known of its identity of former Yugoslavia country.Today,this rising country,recently formed in 2006,has much more aspects to dig into.A book composed by Kenneth Morrison,Montenegro:A Modern History,is providing us with a thorough and objective sample.It describes how Montenegro boosts its diverse ethnicity with its citizens struggling over politics,economy,religion,and culture in the past.It charts the wax and wane of the dynasties,and the battle and integration of ethnicity and religion with plain and comprehensive language,in which objective historical facts and subjective personal thoughts are intertwined alongside the description.This book is translated by the translation team of Changsha University of Science and Technology.A few postgraduate students are included in this team,as they aim to contribute themselves in promoting and popularizing the history of Montenegro.The lack of Chinese publications in popularizing the information about Montenegro may become a barrier for the Chinese to know more about this country.That is to say,this translation project could boost friendly exchanges between the Republic of China and Montenegro and have a profound significance in mutual understanding and cultural communication.This is a qualitative report on the translation experience of the historical document,Montenegro:A Modern History.Chapter 2 and 3 are translated into Chinese and analyzed by the author of this thesis with procedures of the Functional Equivalence Theory(henceforth the Theory)proposed by Eugene.A.Nida.It is widely investigated and confirmed regarding its applicability in literary documents,and it enjoys high reputation among Chinese scholars.It has been applied to the text of this task as it requires a certain level of equivalence in regards to the lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic level.After analyzing the examples extracted from the text on four different levels,the author has arrived to the conclusions that historical documents not only serve informative function,it also has the features of being historical,objective and literary.This type of documents is not up to personal will to change for its objectivity and irreversibility.The historical and objective feature becomes the bone whereas the literary feature the flesh and blood.Its linear development allows the readers to observe,comprehend and comment and its literary feature grants the text with unadorned simplicity.The translators should be as familiar with the source text as possible,doing their best effort to avoid mistranslation and omission.The author reckons the procedures of analysis,transfer and restructuring proposed in the Theory can be of great guidance to the translation process,as the step-by-step measure allows the author to analyse the sentences from a simple form of sentence structure before reaching an all-round translation.There is no universal method that applies to all types of content.This requires the translators to consider according to the context and blended them flexibly with multiple translation methods including literal translation,paraphrase,borrowing and so on.In the meantime,the translators should adopt a scrupulous and meticulous attitude in translating historical documents as well as culture-loaded words.The translation should be original and faithful but not excessive or disobey the facts.The aim is to let the TL readers have a similar effect on the translation like that of the SL readers and achieve the equivalence effect between the source text and the target text. |
