This thesis is an E-C translation report.The translation project is selected from Michael Burke’s The Routledge Handbook of Stylistics.The editor compiled 32 theses written by the leading stylistics scholars in the world,providing a comprehensive and systematic introduction to stylistics in four parts: historical perspectives,core issues,contemporary topics and emerging and future trends.The book aims to convey knowledge and research related to stylistics,which is an essential reading for researchers,postgraduates and undergraduate students in this field.The text material of this project is selected from the ninth and tenth chapters of the book,which are Stylistics and relevance theory,as well as Stylistics,point of view and modality respectively,which belong to the core issues of stylistics.Therefore,being faithful to the original text,and using concise language to convey the academic viewpoints and information of the text have become the key and difficult issues in this translation.Specifically,lexical difficulties are embodied in a large number of proper nouns in stylistics and its related disciplines,as well as common words in particular contexts.In terms of sentence patterns,academic texts often use long sentences to achieve complete,accurate and logical semantic expression.The difficulties,therefore,are mainly reflected in dealing with various long and difficult sentences and passive sentences.In terms of discourse,academic texts are characterized by rigorous logic and various cohesive devices,so the difficulties lie in dealing with the cohesion and coherence of discourse,and reproducing the scholar’s thinking product and language style.In order to solve the above difficulties,the translator adheres to the principle of combining Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation,flexibly applying translation techniques such as addition,deletion,conversion and readjustment of word order,so as to be faithful to the original text and give consideration to the effect of expression.Through this translation practice,the writer realizes that although semantic translation and communicative translation have different emphases,they can complement each other in academic text translation.Semantic translation helps solve the translation of proper nouns and academic phrases as well as cohesion and coherence of discourse to reproduce the author’s logical thinking process,while communicative translation helps to solve the translation of common nouns and adjectives in specific context,as well as long and complex sentences and passive sentences,so as to guide readers to understand the connotation of the article and enhance the expressive effect.In addition,the writer is also aware of the importance of language knowledge and bilingual understanding and expression ability,which can improve the quality of translation.
