Translate into English: The forms and decorative elements of Beijing Opera costumes are related to the historical background and social customs,as well as closely related to the character’s identity and personality traits. Therefore, studying traditional Beijing Opera costumes can help us gain a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture, history, and thought. For the costumes of traditional Beijing Opera female roles, the iconology theory is applied for systematic research to innovate and apply its elements in modern costume design. In the design process, the concepts are transformed into design works through systematically extracting, summarizing, and analyzing the forms, patterns, and color combinations of traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes. These explorations and attempts provide a relatively systematic method for the inheritance, development, and modern application of traditional Beijing Opera costumes, aiming to contribute to the inheritance and development of Chinese traditional culture.First,an introduction to the relevant definitions and development history of Beijing Opera female roles is given. The characters and costume features of the six types of female roles, namely Zhengdan,Huadan,Huashan,Wudan,Laodan, and Caidan, are analyzed.Zhengdan’s costumes are gorgeous and exquisite, with a stable personality;Huadan’s costumes are mainly bright and gorgeous colors, with a lively and unrestrained personality;Huashan’s costumes emphasize a charming, gentle temperament, with an unrestrained personality and strong chivalrous spirit;Wudan’s costumes are mainly characterized by splendid brocade, with an unyielding image;Laodan’s costumes lean towards darker tones, with a kind image;and Caidan’s costumes are characterized by their vividness and humor.Second, the three levels of iconology theory are used to systematically study the traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes. The first level involves the pre-iconology description of the form, embroidery techniques, and decorative patterns of traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes.Long gowns are often worn by royal and noble ladies, with elaborate decorations;short clothes are mainly worn by lower-class women, with simple patterns;armor costumes are often worn by women skilled in martial arts, with intricate patterns. The second level involves iconological analysis of the historical origins, implied meanings, and color schemes, with the form of traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes originating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, decorated with natural landscapes, animals, and text patterns, symbolizing auspiciousness. The color combinations mainly emphasize primary and secondary contrasts, color harmony, and coordination to highlight the theme, enhance the overall sense, and make the costumes more harmonious. The third level involves iconological interpretation from the aspects of ideological connotation, symbolic metaphor, and theatrical interest.Traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes embody the creation ideas of "preparing objects for use" and "unadorned perfection",as well as the metaphorical expression of gender and class symbols, making the characters more charming and artistically appealing.Third, the design works are put into practice.Innovative application cases of traditional Beijing Opera female role costume elements are deeply analyzed and borrowed from their structure and pattern applications. The cultural characteristics of traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes are ingeniously integrated with modern fashion elements, and the design works interpret the design concept of "preparing objects for use".Finally, this research uses the research methods of iconology to systematically study the traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes, enriching the research methods in this direction. The research methods and practices provide important references for the related fields of intangible cultural heritage protection and inheritance, offering a more comprehensive and accurate understanding and guidance for protectors and researchers. The study of traditional Beijing Opera female role costumes is of great value and significance for the development of Chinese folk cultural heritage rescue projects and cultural inheritance,as well as for enhancing the country’s cultural confidence and promoting the spread and influence of Chinese culture.
