A Report On The Translation Of The Sun Dog (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Explicitation Strategy

This dissertation is an E-C translation report about a horror fiction,and the material is excerpted from Stephen King’s The Sun Dog.Horror fiction has always been popular with the public,and Stephen King is one of the most famous horror authors in the world,so the translation of this novel can meet the demand of the Chinese market.The Sun Dog is a narrative literary work.In the source text,some information is often omitted in the sentences,traits of characters are reflected in detail,things or plots that are described earlier may appear in the later paragraph,and there are many allusions from the country of source text.In addition,some words in the source text are ambiguous when translated into Chinese because of the differences between Chinese and English.According to these features,the translator chooses to use explicitation as the theoretical foundation to translate the implicit and ambiguous content more clearly.By comparing the source text with the target text,the translator discusses the way to realize explicitation of the source text at three levels: lexical,syntactic and discourse level,and summarizes the translation methods.At the lexical level,the translator translates allusions and vague words through annotation and specification.At the syntactic level,paraphrase is adopted to translate the fixed collocation and ambiguous sentences,and addition is adopted to deal with the omitted contents in the source text.At the discourse level,in order to make the logic of the translation clearer and the expression more close to the reading habits of Chinese people,translation techniques such as adding conjunctions,reference and sentence reconstruction are used,which can achieve the cohesion and coherence of the text.This report shows the translation process of horror fiction with explicitation strategy,summarizes the difficulties in the process,and puts forward corresponding methods.The translator hopes this report could provide some enlightenment for translators of horror fiction.
