| Horror fiction, an element of popular culture, is a kind of light novel. With theintention to bring horror feeling to readers (or to terrify them), its main content covershorror things. Its unique hair-raising atmosphere attracts many fans, in which fluentnarration plays an important role in the novel. And the creation of this atmosphere owns tothe author’s vivid descriptions.This translation case——Dead Space：Martyr is an opportunity for us to learn aboutthe creation of American popular horror novels. In translating such kind of novels,translators are supposed to pay more attention to the fluency and readability of their works.Did they handle the details properly? Did they reproduce the air of original text? Thinkingabout these things is the key to the practice and study of horror novel’s translation.Therefore the translation of the sentences and words play a major part in this project. Inaddition, not only the horror descriptions in the novel, but also the huge amount oftechnical terms are a great challenge to this translation. Thus, based on this translationcase, the translation report introduces the translation process systematically, and focuseson summarizing the translation methods and techniques as well as ideas gained during thetranslation process. The report is of four parts, namely, project description, task process,case study, and conclusion. The first part elaborates on the features of the original text andits process of selection. The second part describes the translating preparation work fortranslation, in terms of background knowledge, technical support and translation theoryacquisition, as well as timing and quality control. Case study forms the third part, in whichtypical words and sentences are excerpted to explain the translation methods used. Thefinal part is a conclusion of the whole translation project. This project aims to introducethe American modern horror literature, intending to help Chinese students and translatorsbetter understand and study translation. |
