A Report On C-E Interpreting For The 2019 Seminar On The Design,Construction And Development Of Employment Service System From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

China assists the economic and social development of other developing countries and continuously strengthens cooperation with them.This practice report is based on the author’s experience of conference interpretation in the 2019 Seminar on the Design,Construction and Development of Employment Service System.In this meeting,the author provides the consecutive interpretation service to promote communications.This practical report is predicated upon Functional Equivalence Theory which is declared by Eugene Nida.Based on the response of the target audience,it lays stress on functional equivalence between languages because the blind pursuit of formal equivalence leads to misunderstanding.In the process of interpreting,techniques of adjustment,such as addition,subtraction and alteration,can be used to achieve functional equivalence between different languages.Under the guidance of the theory,the report makes analysis of the problems encountered in the process of interpreting at lexical,syntactic and discourse levels,and explains techniques used at each level.Techniques employed at the lexical level include addition,subtraction,and alteration of word class.At the syntactic level,the translation of active voice,Chinese subjectless sentences and Chinese paratactic sentences are discussed.At the discourse level,the report mainly analyzes how to achieve functional equivalence between hypotactic and paratactic languages based on the context.This practice gives a hint that the theory should be highly valued in interpretation practice.Hope this report can provide a certain reference for other interpreters to solve problems in the process of interpretation.
