A Report On E-C Translation Of Outline(Excerpts) At Lexical And Syntactic Levels

This is an English-Chinese translation practice report rooted in the first two chapters of Outline,written by a Canadian-born English novelist,Rachel Cusk.Outline is one of the2015 New York Times Top Ten Books.It consists of ten different stories to be connected with each other by the narrator’s journey to Greek.As an autobiographical novel,it reveals a powerful way to narrate stories.The topics of this novel are marriage,love and separation.This report is mainly based on the first two chapters where the narrators stated stories about an old man and Ryan separately.With sufficient preparation,including reading relevant journals and parallel texts,the difficulties can be set at both lexical and syntactic levels.Sometimes,it was hard to find an accurate and concise way to express the meaning of the words and sentences.Therefore,the using of Chinese four-character phrases and the conversion of word class were a good way to solve these problems.At the same time,the right analyses of the sentence structures and adopting correct translation approaches finally solved all the problems..After finishing this report,the author profoundly realized that the main thoughts of the novel should be transmitted to the readers no matter in what languages.At the same time,it is significant to make the target text concise and accurate.In addition,sufficient preparation is the key to achieve good target texts.
