A Simulating Interpreting Report On The 8^th International Macadamia Symposium Based On The Interpretive Theory

This is a simulating simultaneous interpreting report guided by the Interpretive Theory on the speeches delivered at the opening ceremony of the 8~thh International Macadamia Symposium held in 2018.In this report,certain cases encountered in practice process and their corresponding interpreting tactics are going to be analyzed,aiming at better promoting the exchanges and cooperation in international macadamia industry.Originated back to 1960’s,the Interpretive Theory put forward by scholars represented by Seleskovitch and Lederer is a significant and instructive theory in interpreting activities.The Interpretive Theory believes that interpreting is a process of explaining meanings which is not just the simple transferring of linguistic signs but behind which meanings are hidden.In interpreting process,objects an interpreter comprehends,transfers and re-expresses are ideas and meanings the speaker really wants to convey instead of his or her oral expressions,which refers to the key task an of an interpreter is deverbalizing to capture meanings.As a key task in interpreting process,deverbalizing is a core step where meanings are produced.Contents of this simulating simultaneous interpreting practice are speeches given at the opening ceremony of the 8~thh International Macadamia Symposium held on October 17,2018 in Lincang City of Yunnan Province.Delegates from Cambodia,Australia,Myanmar and Yunnan Province gave welcome and keynote speeches.Difficulties in interpreting process are mainly in Chinese keynote speeches,such as long sentences carrying a large amount of information,careful wording,accurate numbers and examples,polysemy as well as words and expressions with metaphorical meanings.With the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,this report gives a case study about relevant interpreting tactics towards corresponding difficulties,long sentences,polysemy and metaphorical words and expressions after combining source texts and interpreted version,which can be a reference for future study and practice.
