A Report On Simulated C-E Simultaneous Interpreting Of“Scientific Pandemic Prevention,Marketing Empowerment-What Lies Ahead For Tourism Industry”:Difficulties In And Coping Tactics For Interpreting Vague Logic In Chinese Complex Sentences

The project of this simultaneous interpreting is excerpted from an online forum named“Scientific Pandemic Prevention,Marketing Empowerment—What Lies Ahead for Tourism Industry” which was organized by School of Business of East China University of Science and Technology.The language in the source text tends to be impromptu and has obvious colloquial characteristics with a large number of Chinese complex sentences.As Chinese complex sentences are abundant in clauses and lacking in connectives,it is often difficult to understand their logical relations,which brings great challenges to the reporter.Therefore,this report focuses on the difficulties in interpreting vague logic in Chinese complex sentences and the corresponding coping tactics.The main difficulty of this task is how to understand the inner logic in Chinese complex sentences and properly present them in a way consistent with English expression.According to the analysis of the transcripts and characteristics of different kinds of Chinese complex sentences,the reporter divides the main difficulties into two types:(1)difficulties in interpreting vague logic in partially marked complex sentences;(2)difficulties in interpreting vague logic in unmarked complex sentences.According to the French translator,Danica Seleskovitch’s triangle model of the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the process of interpreting can be divided into three steps:comprehension,deverbalization and re-expression.The central task of an interpreter in the process of interpreting is to break away from the shell of the source text structure.Based on a full understanding of the sense of the source text,the re-expression should be in consistent with the linguistic form of the target language.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the reporter tries to solve the above difficulties.The corresponding coping tactics are as follows:(1)combination of clauses;division of units of sense;omission of unnecessary information;(2)restructuring sentences;generalization of main ideas;addition of connectives.The difficulties in this interpreting task and the coping tactics help the reporter deepen the understanding of interpreting Chinese complex sentences and provide some experience for future interpreting.
