This report is based on a simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting of the third session of the lecture held in Beijing on July 9,2021 to study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech on July 1,2021.The lecture aims to analyze General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speech at the ceremony marking the centenary of the CPC and to help people understand the new developments in China in various fields. The language of this lecture is formal and rigorous, with the dual characteristics of spoken and written language.During the process of simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter found that the interpretation of Chinese long attributives is challenging.Due to the difference of word order between Chinese and English attributive structures and the intensive information of attributive components, interpreting until the emergence of the headword will inevitably miss much information, resulting in low-quality language conversion, which are mainly reflected in three aspects:(1)long attributives consisting of parallel structure;(2)long attributives consisting of joint structure;(3)long attributives consisting of embedded structure. The Interpretive Theory proposed by Danica Selescovitch in the late 1960 s,a French translator, holds that the process of interpretation consists of three steps: “the comprehension of the meaning”,“deverbalization” and “reformulation of the meaning”.According to the requirements of the Interpretive Theory, interpreters should precisely convey information rather than simply convert words.Under the guidance of Seleskovitch’s Interpretive Theory, this report puts forward some tactics for interpreting Chinese long attributives into English:(1)for long attributives consisting of parallel structure, anticipation and waiting can be adopted;(2)for long attributives consisting of joint structure, omission and conversion can be adopted;(3)for long attributives consisting of embedded structure, segmentation and simplification can be adopted. This report explores the difficulties and coping tactics in interpreting long attributives in C-E simultaneous interpreting and contributes to the research in this field. It provides valuable inspiration and reference for the author and other interpreters in practicing C-E simultaneous interpreting that may involve long attributives. |
