With the continuous expansion of urban population, problems such as resource shortage, environmental pollution, traffic jam, potential safety hazard are becoming increasingly prominent in cities. In order to solve these problems,"smart city" comes into being.Smart city refers to the use of various information technologies or innovative concepts to connect and integrate urban systems and services to improve the efficiency of resource utilization, optimize urban management and services and improve the quality of life of citizens. The translation of foreign texts in smart city construction can provide a reference for the construction of domestic smart cities.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts, this report mainly explores the concept, characteristics and problems of smart cities, and summarizes translation experience and studies translation skills. The source text is excerpted from the book Smart Cities:Introducing Digital Innovation to Cities, which was published by Emerald Publishing Ltd in June 2019.This translation practice report consists of four chapters.Chapter One is a description of the translation task,as well as its background, significance and text features.Chapter Two describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, translation process and quality control.Chapter Three is the case analysis, which analyzes the translation methods of the source text from three levels:lexical, syntactic and discourse, under the guidance of translation theory.Chapter Four is the summary of the translation practice experience and reflection on the deficiencies. As a scientific and technological English text, there are many long and compound sentences in the source text. The passive voice is also widely used in source text.Translation shifts play a strong guiding role in the translation of these contents. This translation practice has increased the translator’s experience in translating scientific and technological texts. It is expected that the translation practice can enrich the translation of smart city construction in China and provide references for research in relevant fields.
