Building smart cities is a global trend today.China has also embarked on the construction of smart cities, which has become an important measure to implement the initiatives of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, such as innovation-driven development, promoting new urbanization, and building a well-off society in an all-round way.The construction of smart cities, therefore,is of great significance in realizing sustainable urban development, leading the application of information technology and improving the comprehensive competitiveness of cities. In accordance with this circumstance, the present translation project selected Chapter 2,3,and 4 of the book Digital and Smart Cities as the source text, since the source text focuses on the building of smart cities,it can serve as a reference for China's smart city construction. This report firstly introduces the translation project including its background and significance, secondly analyzes the text, such as its source, content and features;thirdly describes the translation procedures:pre-translation preparation, quality monitoring and modification;and then analyzes the translation techniques adopted under the guidance of Catford's category shifts theory, namely, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. The specific techniques that embody the superiority of Catford's category shifts theory in guiding the translation of technical texts are: voice shifting, word shifting, unit shifting, clause shifting, and so on.Lastly the author summarizes her experience and the shortcomings of her translation work. The translation practice is significant in that: 1)in terms of the choice of source text,Digital and Smart City shed light on the shaping of China's smart cities;and 2)in terms of the choice of the translation theory, using Catford's category shifts theory to analyze the translation techniques of the source text from different perspectives can provide guidance for the translation of similar texts yet to be translated.
