The book Sustainability Measures for COVID-19 Pandemic discusses how to achieve sustainability during the pandemic, and the author selects the chapter Internet of Things and Web Services for Handling Pandemic Challenges as a source text for the translation practice. This translation report mainly analyzes the translation methods in the translation of scientific and technical texts from four aspects: structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts under the guidance of Catford’s category shifts theory.Through the analysis of the translation process and cases, this practice report focuses on the following issue: how to choose appropriate translation strategies at both word and sentence levels to accurately convey the textual information according to the characteristics of scientific and technical texts.By studying the methods of lexical and syntactic translation, the author strives to make the translation accurately convey the message of the source text and conform to the linguistic habits of the target language. In the translation process, the following key issues should be addressed: first, structure shifts, which are shifts between postpositional and prepositional attributives,as well as active and passive voice.Secondly, class shifts are mainly reflected in lexical changes, such as shifts of English nouns to Chinese verbs,English adjectives to Chinese verbs, etc.Third, unit shifts require changing the sentence structure of the source language and converting it into different sentence components in the target language, including the translation methods of subordinate clauses and some complex sentences.Fourth is the translation of specific words in scientific and technical English texts, including the translation of technical terms and abbreviations, etc.Guided by Catford’s category shifts theory, the author refers to relevant books, papers, and journals to analyze the translation difficulties in the selected texts, hoping to accumulate translation experience about the Internet of Things and Web Services technology in response to COVID-19.
